Upgrade Heating System Phase 1

VA NJ Healthcare System East Orange Campus in East Orange, NJ

Northeast Infrastructure (NEI) was tasked with providing design modifications and upgrades to the heating system as part of a Phase 1 project in several areas in Building 1 at the East Orange VA Medical Center (EOVAMC).

Project Included

Designing a steam distribution “backbone” that includes demolition of existing dumb waiters, a new tap in the high-pressure header to feed a pressure reducing valve (PRV), medium pressure distribution run in chases located where the dumb waiters were located, and valving and capping feeds on five floor locations

Designing new condensate return equipment including receivers, associated piping, pumps and controls

Installing of steam to hydronic heat exchangers, pumps, pressure reducing valve, expansion tank, air separator and all associated valves and controls in mechanical rooms

Documenting the process for demolishing the three existing condensate pumps, demolishing the existing steam radiators, capping existing steam pipes, removing associated valves and controls, demolishing the existing fan coil units, disconnecting the chiller water pipes and associated controls

Installing new fan coil units with chilled water coil for cooling and hot water coil for heating

Addressing ICRA control measures based on the anticipated level of disturbance and patient risk factors
